COVID-19 Update 040320

Good Afternoon Unity Families,

In recent weeks and days, the State of California has escalated its efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, through the Executive Order issued by Governor Gavin Newsom calling for California residents to stay at home, with exceptions for attending to essential needs.

With this in mind, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced this week that: “Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year.” Thurmond explicitly stated, “[t]his is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning.”

Locally, Orange County Superintendent of Schools, Al Mijares, expressed his support for Orange County school districts to extend campus closures. “Keeping children home from school is a drastic measure, one that shows how seriously health officials and educators are taking this public health threat,” said Mijares. “We must do our part now to flatten the curve.”

Based on these conditions, directives and preventive measures, the Unity Schools SoCal Board has extended the closure of our school through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, which ends on June 12, 2020. We emphasize that instruction has NOT ended and students will still be getting an education from Unity teachers and staff.

We will continue to closely monitor the guidance from federal, state, and local authorities and coordinate our actions and responses with experts from health agencies. Most importantly, we intend to continue providing the following educational essential services to our community: Distance Learning, and Student Technology.

For Our Seniors: We deeply appreciate the impact that this extraordinary situation is having on all of our students, staff, and families, but especially all of our seniors and their families. It is heartbreaking not to be able to celebrate all of your successes and great moments of senior year in person. Our staff misses you and we are thinking of all of you and celebrating from afar. However, please know that we are still committed to honoring our seniors through graduation celebrations, either virtually or in person at a later date to be announced.

We look forward to this crisis coming to an end and welcoming our students back on campus. In the meantime, please continue to check your emails, Parent Square and Unity Middle College social media for updates and information as we will continue to communicate regularly to address questions that could impact our students, including graduation requirements, and other end of the year activities.

Please see below for a few reminders:

April 4, 2020 – April 12, 2020 – Spring Break

  • Our school and office are closed and teachers/staff will be on break.
  • If you need urgent assistance during this time please email Dr. Craig ecraig@unitymchs.org AND Ms. Seth rseth@unitymchs.org. You can also reach Ms. Seth via voice or text at 313-509-8689.

April 13, 2020 – Online Distance Education and Special Education Services Begin

  • The Schoolwide Distance Education Plan including special education services is attached.
  • This plan includes details about how students will learn, communicate with their teachers, submit assignments, and most importantly get the help they need.
  • Teachers are available to students via email during school hours; however, we understand that sometimes it is easier to get questions answered ‘face to face.’ For this reason, we have set up virtual office hours via Zoom for each staff member. The calendar attached has each staff member’s Zoom link. These office hours are specifically for students only. Parents, if you would like to set up a Zoom meeting with a teacher, please email them individually to set that up.
  • Ms. Seth will be holding office hours specific to students on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Parents/Guardians are welcome to join on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • If you have questions as it relates to your child accessing learning, please reach out directly to Ms. Seth by email at rseth@unitymchs.org or  by voice or text at 313-509-8689.

Students with Disabilities

  • Our goal is to continue to provide each student with equity and access through innovation for their education and services during this time.
  • Parents: you will be contacted directly from our service providers to set up Speech and Counseling services remotely
  • If you have any questions in the meantime, please reach out to Mr. Casperson and Ms. Seth.

Student Meals Each School Day

    • Throughout the closure on school days each week, Unity students can go to the Orange United Schools listed below for:
      • Grab-N-Go Breakfast from 8 am to 10 am
      • Grab-N-Go Lunch 10 am to noon
    • Locations serving food are:
      • Handy, California, Esplanade, Taft, Yorba, & Lampson Elementary Schools
      • Portola Middle School
      • Orange HS, El Modena HS, & Canyon HS. (served out of snack bars, not in the cafeteria or multipurpose rooms, to prevent students gathering)

  • Students are not allowed to stay on campus or congregate to consume meals and must be present to pick up food.

We are in this together as a Unity family, and we will get through this. Thank you for your responsiveness, support, and ongoing communication. As always, please reach out to us and let us know what you and your family need. Stay safe and take care of your loved ones.
